Over 250 respondents from around the world provided insight into core network functionality including SNMP, *flow technology, syslog management and preferred hardware vendors. Results showed that respondents were mostly concerned about network stability in their monitoring services, versus performance and user misuse. 68% of surveyed respondents use Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) traps in their network environments; with over half using V2, as opposed to V3 and V1. Netflow from CISCO held the majority of respondents’ results at almost seventy five percent, versus sflow and jflow barely making up the remaining twenty five percent. Just over half of the surveyed respondents were monitoring syslogs with the majority of these using Open Source syslog monitoring tools. CISCO was also the clear winner of preferred hardware vendors with almost 75% of respondents indicating that was their preferred vendor choice. Over half of these indicated that an overwhelming majority of their network environment uses CISCO equipment. In addition, it was evident that while the majority of respondents backup their network configurations, nearly a third does not, meaning if a device failed all their network configs would be lost and would need to be reconfigured without a reference. In conclusion, the majority of respondents surveyed (82%) use some form of network monitoring service and use a combination of monitoring tools.

We took our interest a little bit further to explore the cost of big name holidays in the United States and how much the average American is willing to spend to celebrate it. Halloween has always been a time to scare, to trick and to treat. But it seems Americans have been trick or treating themselves so much that it’s almost scary. Halloween has turned into one of the priciest holidays in the United States. Between costumes, candy and pumpkins the average American is spending anywhere between $70 and $80 each Halloween; contributing to a total average US expenditure of $7.2 billion dollars annually since 2011. Luckily due to heavier rains in the Midwest promoting pumpkin patches to flourish and their cost to lower, this year’s total price tag for Halloween 2013 is predicted to come in at roughly $6.9 billion spent, compared to last year’s $8 billion spent. But no matter which way you carve it, spending billions each year on candy, costumes and pumpkins is what we call a scary statistic. To see how the typical American spends their Halloween fund, check out our Cost of Halloween in the United States infographic.

The Air Quality Index is a metric used to reflect the local air quality across the country. Taken daily in over a thousand locations, the Environmental Protection Agency regulates 1987 air pollutants under the Clean Air Act. The metric range is broken down by value, air quality and color code. The major pollutants that are monitored are ozone, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and particulates. Ozone is a form of oxygen but has a pungent odor and bluish color. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and very toxic gas that comes from common objects like vehicles. Particulates are bits and pieces of debris in the air that can be breathed into the lungs. Sulfur dioxide is a toxic gas and a major pollutant that results from the burning of fuels such as coal and oil. The Clean Air Act, established in 1963, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It is a federal law that the Environmental Protection Agency regulates. There were major amendments applied to the Act in 1970, 1977 and 1990.
